Hearing Evaluation

A hearing evaluation is an important first step in understanding the hearing difficulties you may be experiencing. It helps measure how well you hear different sounds and speech, and it can reveal patterns of hearing loss that may be affecting communication in everyday life.

At our practice, hearing evaluations are provided by Danielle Burke, HIS, a licensed hearing instrument specialist who works closely with patients to better understand their hearing concerns and review what options may help. This visit provides clear answers and helpful guidance to help you understand what comes next.

Signs It May Be Time for a Hearing Evaluation

Many people do not notice hearing changes right away. In many cases, the signs develop gradually over time. You may want to schedule a hearing evaluation if you have noticed any of the following:

  • Frequently asking others to repeat themselves
  • Difficulty following conversations in background noise
  • Turning the television or phone volume up more than usual
  • Trouble hearing softer voices or certain pitches
  • Feeling tired or frustrated after conversations
  • Loved ones commenting on changes in your hearing

Even mild hearing difficulties can begin to affect communication, relationships and day-to-day activities. A hearing evaluation can help you better understand what you are experiencing.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

Your appointment typically takes about an hour, along with additional time to review results and discuss any questions you may have.

During the visit, Danielle will talk with you about your hearing concerns, the listening situations where you notice difficulty and your general hearing history. She will then complete a series of hearing tests to measure how well you hear different sounds and how clearly you understand speech.

Once the testing is complete, our specialist will go over the results with you in clear, easy to understand language. She will explain the findings and talk through any recommendations based on your hearing needs, communication goals and lifestyle.

Understanding Your Results and Next Steps

The results of your hearing evaluation provide useful information about where hearing challenges may be occurring and how they may be affecting your ability to communicate.

After reviewing the results, Danielle will discuss the next steps that make the most sense for your situation. For some patients, that may simply mean monitoring hearing over time. For others, it may mean discussing hearing aids and the features that could be most beneficial based on their needs and daily routine.

If hearing aids are recommended, our specialist can explain the available styles and technology options, including features such as Bluetooth connectivity, directional microphones, rechargeability, and tools designed to help in more challenging listening environments.

Bringing a Family Member Can Be Helpful

Because hearing difficulties often affect communication with loved ones, many patients find it helpful to bring a spouse, family member, or friend to the appointment.

Having another person there can provide support, help you remember important information, and make it easier to talk through recommendations together.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to do anything to prepare for my hearing evaluation?

There is no special preparation required for your visit. However, if you suspect your ears are completely blocked with wax, or if you are currently experiencing a severe cold or sinus infection, please let us know when booking. A clear ear canal and healthy sinuses ensure our testing equipment can capture the most accurate, reliable baseline of your natural hearing.

What happens if you see wax in my ears before the test?

Every evaluation begins with a visual inspection of your ear canal, known as otoscopy. If Danielle observes a significant wax impaction that would interfere with accurate test results, or if she notes anything that requires medical attention, she will pause the evaluation. We will then recommend the appropriate next steps, which may include a quick visit to your primary care physician to have the wax removed before we complete your testing.

Will I get a copy of my test results?

Yes. Immediately following the testing, Danielle will plot your results on a graph called an audiogram. She will walk you through exactly what this chart means, explaining which specific pitches or sounds you might be missing in everyday conversation. You will receive a clear explanation of your hearing profile and a copy of your audiogram for your personal health records.

How does the evaluation help determine the right hearing technology?

The evaluation is not just a pass/fail test; it provides the exact acoustic blueprint of your hearing. As a Hearing Instrument Specialist, Danielle uses this precise data to understand your unique hearing profile. If a hearing loss is present, this specific data is what allows her to custom-program hearing devices so they clarify the exact frequencies you struggle with, rather than just turning up the volume on everything.

Does insurance cover the cost of a hearing evaluation?

Many health insurance plans cover hearing evaluations, though coverage for hearing aids varies significantly. We recommend contacting your provider to verify your benefits, or our office can assist you in understanding your coverage options during your visit.

Do you perform hearing evaluations for children?

At Hear Well Hearing Center, our specialized testing equipment and services are designed exclusively for adult hearing care and rehabilitation. If you are seeking a hearing evaluation for a child, we highly recommend consulting with a pediatric specialist or an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) physician who is equipped for pediatric testing.
